TIMSS-R, The Third International Mathematics
and Science Study (Repeat) is the largest and most comprehensive comparative
international study of education ever conducted. It is the successor
of the 1995 TIMSS study. Prior to the TIMSS study in the mid 1990’s,
the International Association for Evaluation of Educational Achievement
(IEA) had conducted separate studies of mathematics and science during
the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s. TIMSS was the first to combine mathematics
and science.
TIMSS and TIMSS 99 were conducted by the International Association
for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement. The study is funded
by the US Department of Education, National Science Foundation, Government
of Canada, the World Bank and other participating nations, states,
consortia and districts.
38 nations, 13 states and 14 consortia and individual school districts
participated in the TIMSS 99 study conducted in 1999.
Participation in the 1999 TIMSS study provided NCUSD 203 with an
unprecedented opportunity to compare our students’ mathematics and
science achievement to the international community. In addition, we
knew from the 1995 study, that the 1999 study would provide the district
with a rich source of information we could use to evaluate aspects
of our mathematics and science programs.
