History of the Mathematics Program

1987

  • Worked with consultant Dr. Larry Leutzinger from the University of Northern Iowa
  • Studied the NCTM Standards
  • Adopted District 203 belief about mathematics instruction from NCTM
  • Identified K-8 grade-level critical objectives for District 203
  • Trained staff on Problem Solving and Critical Thinking in Mathematics, funded by the Corridor Partnership and the National Science Foundation.

1988

  • Reviewed mathematics resources to determine alignment with critical objectives
  • Matched District 203 objectives to the texts being reviewed
  • Continued to work with Dr. Larry Leutzinger for the purpose of aligning grade level objectives to NCTM standards
  • Continued to send building teams for Problem Solving and Critical Thinking Training
  • Chose texts K-8 based on the review criteria

1989

  • Developed math framework for grades K-8 based on the NCTM Standards and the District 203 critical objectives
  • Continued to work with Dr. Larry Leutzinger for the purpose of K-8 articulation
  • Continued to send building teams for Problem Solving and Critical Thinking Training

1990

  • Reviewed/revised the sequence of the District 203 critical objectives
  • Reviewed/revised framework
  • Developed assessments for grades 1-8 based on critical objectives
  • Developed the 6-8 Advanced Math Program to articulate to the 9th grade honors program
  • Trained 6-8 staff on University of Chicago Mathematics curriculum (UCSMP)

1991

  • Developed K-8 Mini Math (daily math review) and Mental Math to correlate to the critical objectives
  • Added performance assessments
  • Developed criteria for performance assessment scoring (rubric)
  • Refined problem-solving strategies and linked them to specific grade levels
  • Provided training for all K-5 teachers on the use of manipulatives
  • Purchased manipulatives for all schools K-5
  • Purchased calculators for all K-8 math classrooms
  • Developed position paper on calculator use K-8

1992

  • Began to develop the Accelerated Math Program, Grades 3-5
  • Worked with Larry Leutzinger, consultant from the University of Northern Iowa in order to align with 6-12 Advanced/Honors programs
  • Developed criteria for Accelerated Math eligibility, Grades 3-5
  • Identified critical objectives sequence for Accelerated Math, Grades 3-5

1993

  • Reviewed/revised assessments
  • Developed placement test for Accelerated Math based on problem-solving and math thinking
  • Worked with Larry Leutzinger on the development of Accelerated Math Assessments, Grades 3-8

1994

  • Worked with Larry Leutzinger to finalize District 203 Learner Outcomes for Mathematics aligned with Illinois State Goals
  • Correlated critical objectives to Learner Outcomes
  • Revised assessments to align with the Learner Outcomes
  • Developed assessments in trimester format
  • Piloted new assessments
  • Implemented Accelerated Math Program in grades 1-5
  • Began staff development on Differentiated Instruction
  • Held articulation meetings with Middle School on Mathematics framework and assessments
  • Coordinated the Accelerated Math Program elementary with the Middle School Advanced Math program

1995

  • Introduced the Software American System for scoring assessments
  • Analyzed data from standardized assessments to determine district performance levels

1996

  • Studied the TIMSS report
  • Read "Splintered Vision"

  • Began Parent Dialog Group on Mathematics (Met quarterly for two years)

1997

  • Attended mathematics conferences
  • Participated in dialog around the revised NCTM standards --Principles and Practices
  • Began working with John Dossey, Professor Emeritus from Illinois State University (Worked with him for 4 years)

  • Identified Focus Areas per grade level for mathematics
  • Wrote grade level objectives
  • Developed an evaluation tool for selection of resources
  • Selected resources
  • Participated in the TIMSS 99 at the 8th grade level

2000

  • Field tested curriculum framework K-5
  • Implemented curriculum framework 6-8
  • Developed Honors Mathematics Program K-12
  • Field Tested Pass Plan for mathematics assessment

2001

  • Will implement the mathematics curriculum K-5 and 9-12
  • Will pilot new performance assessments K-8 based on math investigation
