Seven Year Curriculum Development Cycle

Year 1 and 2: Plan and Study Specific Discipline

  • A K-12 study/plan committee is formed
  • Committee members attend appropriate local, state, and national meetings.
  • A needs assessment is conducted.
  • Data from the needs assessment is analyzed.
  • Current research and best-practice literature are reviewed.
  • State and national recommendations are studied.
  • State-of-the-art programs are identified and visited.
  • Local assessment data is studied.
  • Information on current District 203 content and time allocations is collected.
  • An end-of-year report is prepared to summarize current status.

Year 3: Develop Curriculum for Specific Discipline

  • Needs assessment and student performance data is reviewed.
  • A philosophy statement of beliefs in the designated discipline is written.
  • The philosophy is aligned with the beliefs, vision and mission of the district.
  • Alignment takes place with district strategic goal of providing quality work.
  • Essential student outcomes are aligned with The Illinois Learning Standards.
  • An essential skills framework is designed. � Benchmarks are established.
  • Appropriate instructional strategies are identified.
  • Textbook/resource specifications are delineated.
  • Textbooks/resources are reviewed.
  • If necessary, local materials are developed.
  • Curriculum guides are written.
  • Budgets are developed for staff development, summer curriculum projects, and textbook/resource purchases.
  • Textbook/resource adoption proposals are sent to the Board of Education.
  • A report of decisions and recommendations is written.
  • Summer staff development and curriculum committees are conducted.

Year 4 and 5: Implement Curriculum

  • Textbooks/resources are distributed to teachers.
  • Summer Curriculum Committee work is distributed to teachers.
  • A year-long staff development calendar for implementation is distributed to all teachers involved in the discipline.
  • All teachers participate in the designed staff development.
  • The K-12 committee assists teachers with implementation.
  • Sub-committees complete curriculum writing and develop student assessments.
  • Buildings develop implementation plans aligned to School Improvement Plans.
  • Teachers are surveyed to determine additional needs.
  • Summer curriculum work is planned as appropriate.

Year 6 and 7: Monitor and Evaluate Curriculum

  • Student performance is assessed.
  • Evaluation surveys are analyzed.
  • Cost impacts are reviewed.
  • A summative evaluation is prepared.
  • Recommendations for future action are written.
