History of the Science Program

1987

  • Science Liaison to elementary schools .5 FTE

1988

  • Purchased Star Lab; developed units
  • Developed the central housing of science resources
  • Hired ESP Science Liaison to fill kits

1989

1990

  • Began partnership with SCI-Tech
  • AAUW release Gender Equity Report
  • Awarded grant for summer science camps for girls
  • Completed BSCS Biology Curriculum Study
  • Worked with Jack Hassard, Georgia State University on teacher training

1991

  • Began partnership with FERMI Lab for teacher training
  • Developed first round of science kits K-5 (Life Science and Physical Science)
  • Began working with Argon National Laboratory for staff training

1992

  • Expanded Summer Science Camps -- not just for girls
  • Completed SEPUP curriculum work
  • Began video collection for science
  • Wrote grant for partnership with DuPage Children's Museum for 3rd graders -- Physical Science connection
  • Aligned curriculum to the Illinois Goals for Learning
  • Began to develop performance assessments for science K-8.
  • Identified staff to take GEMS training
  • Integrated Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking Models for Math and Science (See chart)

1993

  • Purchased microscopes for all buildings
  • Provided staff with Problem-Based Learning Training
  • Work in partnership with IMSA

1994

  • Provided training on AIMS
  • Star Lab became a requirement for Earth Science Strand at grade 2
  • Included all 3rd graders in Du Page Children's Museum Kids Design Engineering as part of the Physical Science strand
  • Developed District 203 Learner Outcomes based on the Illinois Goals for Learning.
  • Assessment Development -- worked with North Central College

  • Enrichment opportunities developed

1996

  • Began to train teachers on LEGO LOGO
  • Began relationship with Packer Engineering for Real-Life Physics Experiences for teachers
  • Experimental Design Posters K-8 were developed and printed for every K-8 classroom Primary - Intermediate - Junior High

1997

  • Selected teachers from grades 3-5 participated in AIMS training sponsored by Amoco

1998

  • Several staff members and selected buildings participated in the Eldon Project with Bill Curtis
