Physical Education K-12 Philosophy Statement

 

The Physical Education Department, as well as Naperville School District 203, has made a commitment to prepare students to live healthy, productive, and physically active lives fro the 21st Century.

  • Physical education will provide every student with a variety of challenges that will contribute to the development and maintenance of their physical, cognitive, and affective well being.
  • Students will be provided the foundation for making informed decisions that will empower them to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
  • Physical Education is a lifelong process, which is the primary responsibility of the student, shared by home, district and community.

District 203 Physical Education Curriculum Belief Statements

The following strands must be interwoven into the K-12 Physical Education curriculum:  movement skills strand; fitness education strand; team building strand; cognitive/literacy strand and technology strand.

Quality daily Physical Education is essential, K-12.

Delivery of quality instruction requires certified physical educators.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION LEARNING STANDARDS:

Students should know and be able to do these things in physical education:

 

  1. Perform skills efficiently in a variety of physical activities, adventure education activities, and rhythmic movement activities.
  2. Analyze various movement concepts and applications.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of rules, safety, and strategies during physical activity.
  4. Know and apply the principles and components of health-related fitness.
  5. Assess individual fitness levels.
  6. Set goals based on fitness data and develop, implement, and monitor an individual fitness improvement plan.
  7. Demonstrate individual responsibility during group physical activities.
  8. Demonstrate cooperative skills during structured group physical activity.

Each day in physical education class more than one of these standards is being met.

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM:

 

The physical education curriculum, which is intertwined throughout the six years the children are here at Beebe:

SKILL THEMES

Locomotor Skills: walking, running, hopping, jumping, skipping, galloping, side-sliding, chasing, fleeing, and dodging.

Non-Manipulative Skills: turning, twisting, rolling, balancing, transferring weight, jumping and landing, stretching, curling.

 

Manipulative (Object Control) Skills: under/over-hand throwing, catching, kicking, punting, hand dribbling, foot dribbling, rolling, volleying, striking with rackets, striking with long-handled implements.

 

MOVEMENT CONCEPTS

Spatial Awareness: (where the body moves)

· location: self/personal-space/general space

·directions: up/down; forward/backward; right/left; clockwise/counter-clockwise

·levels: low/middle(medium)/high

·pathways: straight/curved/zig-zag

·extensions: large/small; near/far

Effort: (how the body moves)

·time: fast/slow; sudden/sustained

·        force: strong/light

·flow: bound/free

Relationships:

·of body parts: round(curved); narrow; wide; twisted; symmetrical/nonsymmetrical

· with objects and/or people: over/under; on/off; near/far; in front/behind; along/through; meeting/parting; surrounding; around; alongside

·with people: leading/following; mirroring/matching; unison/contrast; between groups; groups; partners; solo; alone in a mass

·     Follow safety procedures and rules during play

·     Respect the personal space of others while moving

·    Realize that there are consequences as well as an impact for choices and behaviors made during activities

·    Settling disagreements concerning rule discrepancies

·     Work independently during physical activity

·     Remain on task during a group activity

·    Perform individual roles when participating in a group physical activity

Cooperative skills during structured group physical activities:

·   Work cooperatively and safely with a partner or a small group during physical activity.

·   Complete a task when working with a partner or small group

·   Recognize and respect individuals and their differences in performance within a group
