We believe (and research supports this truth) that those who read for pleasure achieve more than those who do not. Students who are in the habit of reading for fun perform better in the classroom, score higher on standardized tests and, in general, continue their learning beyond the school day. In light of these beliefs, we propose to encourage the reading students at Naperville Central with the establishment of a book discussion club called the Redhawk Readers.
Its purpose is to provide an open forum for students to discuss books which interest them. The ultimate goal of this book club is to encourage students to read and to share their responses with others.
MEETINGS: Redhawk Readers meet every 2 weeks on Thursdays (see calendar) at 3:20 pm in the LRC. Discussions will be totally student led! (Attendees DO NOT HAVE TO READ THE BOOK before coming.)
Students are encouraged to read the book for the discussion ahead of time -- but don't have to! Bring any questions or special concerns about the title with you to the meeting.
ALERT: For the 2007-08 year, some of our titles will be from the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award reading list! NCHS is a registered participant in this new contest to name the Best Book of the Year according to High School Students! Check the whole list and rules out here.
