  • Mini-Mysteries - Eighth grade students at Dakota Meadows Middle School in North Mankato, Minnesota, have written short, two-minute mysteries. Use your wits and detective skills to solve these cases.
  • Mysteries Defined - This site offers everything from "What is a mystery?" to story starters for you to write your own.
  • Childern's Storybooks Online - Can't get to the library or don't have a card? Here are some simple books and illustrations online!

  • Kid's Castle - Graphics heavy site which offers a wealth of information on castles and their inner workings.
  • Library of Congress - Yes, every book that has ever been published has a Library of Congress number inside. Why? Find out about the information here!
  • Create Your Own Adventure - I loved these books when I was in elementary school! Choose your character and then make choices along the way to navigate through your own story!
Writing
  • Houghton Mifflin - This publisher of textbooks has a great site for kids who want to brush up on writing skills.
  • KidzPage - This site is devoted to all types of poetry written by kids or classrooms. Lacking inspiration, check it out!
  • Idiom of the Day - Collins Cobuild offers an idiom a day. Try to incorporate this bit of figurative language into your vocabulary today.
  • Web Grammar - As slang slowly takes over, many of us are confused on what is right and wrong with grammar.

Reference

  • Research It - This is a one stop shop for reference. You're able to use a dictionary, thesaurus, search for quotations, maps, telephone area codes, and even shipping info!
  • Online Dictionary - This online student dictionary provided by Merriam-Webster will help you out if you are stumped, online, and can't find your own dictionary. Are you having problems finding a rhyming word? Or did you want to know how to say hello in sign language?
  • Online Thesaurus - Once the site from Roget's, this online resource has added several fun bells and whistles.
  • The Weather Channel - Sure you might not think this is reference, but believe it or not, the weather shapes our lives. Also check out NOAAs site.
  • Ref Desk - Again, someone has put all the internet resources on one page. Not only do they have excellent sources, but the additional magazines, newspapers, headlines, etc... just make this site a winner!
  • Translation Dictionary - Do you have a friend from class who speaks another language? Surprise them tomorrow by learning to say hello in their language!
  • Worldbook - This is a subscription site and our school does subscribe. Just ask Mr. Mika!
  • Britannica Online - This site debuted by commercial during Super Bowl XXXIV. The information is there, but it's very text oriented. I'd rather just pick up an encyclopedia.
  • Encarta - While you might need the disk for more in-depth research, MSN does allow you basic knowledge online here.
  • Info Please - This site from the Learning Network offers a wealth of online reference information from every topic available.

Just Write!
