May 2008 Principal Newsletter
Well this is it, my last newsletter for Steeple Run. It is very hard to believe that four years have gone by so quickly. I have enjoyed that time here more than many of you may know. I have loved working with your children and seeing their smiles, hearing their stories, and watching them grow. I often tell people that although I have 2 personal children, I have 600 more at school.
As I write this letter, we still have more activities like the ice cream social, the 5th grade party, and Olympic days. I will once again we sitting in the dunk tank during the first hour of the ice cream social, if here is your last chance! I will really treasure this last month as we all prepare for summer and transitions of next school year. I will miss Steeple Run greatly!
I can share some good news about where I am going. I was offered a job as an Intermediate School (grades 4-6) principal in a school district north of Rockford. The school has the district’s PI+ program and also houses the district fine arts magnet program. In addition, the district is just starting to implement the RtI program to help struggling students, which we have been doing for the past four years. Finally, the district is also going to implement PBIS (the system we use for the monthly Superstars and spirit assemblies). I will be able to share so much of our great success with the school and district.
So thank you all again for your support, your kind words, and your patience during the past four years. I hope you feel we have made Steeple Run an even better school by building on all of the great attributes while adding some new ones.
Sincerely,
Michael Scorzo, Principal

April Principal Letter
Welcome back everyone! I hope everyone had some time to relax with family and friends, maybe get away to someplace warm and sunny!
As you are aware, John Leis, our PE teacher passed away on Friday, March 21, 2008 from his battle with cancer. It was a very sad time for all of us here at Steeple Run. He was one of a very small group of original teachers who opened our school in 1977. He will be missed!
There are some common sayings, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” or “find the silver lining in every cloud,” that are very applicable to the loss of Mr. Leis. Although his passing is very sad, we were very fortunate to find Mr. Mitchell for our PE sub. I am very happy to let you know that I will be recommending Mr. Mitchell to be hired full-time as the PE teacher for Steeple Run next year. He is doing a terrific job working with the students and we are very glad to have him.
While we are on the topic of staff, I wanted to also take this time to let you know that we are anticipating a smaller kindergarten enrollment for the 2008-2009 school year. If this happens we will probably have to reduce the number of kindergarten sections from four to three. We would really like to keep all four sections open, so if you know of any families in your neighborhoods with children who will be entering kindergarten next year, please help by giving them our school phone number and we will be happy to talk with them about registering for next year.
Also, before the spring break, a note was sent home in the backpacks from next year’s principal, Ms. Karen Currier. I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know how excited I was when I was informed that Karen would be here next year. Over my four years in the district I have had the opportunity to work with Karen and I respect her greatly. We have many similarities in our philosophies and expectations for a school. Knowing what a great school Steeple Run is, I’m sure you will welcome her into this school family as warmly as you welcomed me. Karen and I will be contact over the next couple of months to ensure a smooth transition.
As is always the case, if you have any questions or comments that you would like to share, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Our number at school is 420-6385.
Sincerely,
Michael Scorzo, Ed.D., Principal
