From the desk of Nick R. Micensky:

Dear Parents, In the holiday season of celebrating and giving thanks...

  • Thank you for your continued parental support and involvement at Scott School. Your participation in events such as parent/teacher conferences, book fair, International Walk to School Day, and Home and School programs is greatly appreciated.
  • Thank you for checking your children's book bag daily, monitoring their homework, and sending them to us each day prepared for another day of learning.
  • Thank you to the Home and School for treating the staff to a luncheon during one of the parent/teacher conference days. It was very tasty and greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
  • An advance thank you for helping your children make wise choices when dressing for the weather. We go outside for recess daily if the wind chill is at or above zero. Boots and snow pants are required to go out into the fields when they are snow covered.
  • Thank you to all the students who brought in pennies during Red Ribbon Week for the Scott School Community Fund. Those "pennies" added up to $850.00 which will be used to assist families in our school that need help with costs related to school supplies, field trips, and hot lunch. Way to go, Scott School Eagles!
  • Thank you for being part of the Scott School family!
Staff Update
We have one new staff member in the office and two others changing hats:

  • Please join us in welcoming Mrs. Munroe to the Scott School staff. She will be assuming the position of health technician. We are thrilled to have her here!
  • Mrs. Healy, the health tech for the last many years has changed chairs. She is now one of the school secretaries. Her knowledge of the school's operations has proved to be a real plus!
  • Mrs. Ricca moved from a secretary position to become our building substitute teacher. She is enjoying the increased contact with children.
Home and School Projects
  • Climbing Wall - Construction of the wall was completed in October. Mr. Garrison and a team of parent volunteers have completed the painting of the wall. Final tasks to be completed include installation of floor anchors for safety and training of adult volunteers. We expect to complete these tasks very soon and are looking forward to climbing!
  • Playground - The playground directly west of the school is a joint venture of the Naperville Park District and School District 203. It is scheduled for replacement this summer. A committee of parents and staff members to guide this process was formed at the last Home and School meeting. We plan to submit a recommended plan before the Spring break. This project is separate from the playground that lies directly south of the school building. As you may remember, that playground was installed a few years ago as a Home and School project. If you have any questions or comments, please give me a call.
School Improvement
In an effort to continuously grow and improve, Scott School has a School Improvement Plan (SIP). In conjunction with other district schools, later this year we will be establishing long term goals for several years. Currently we have targeted two broad areas on which we are concentrating our improvement efforts:

  1. Literacy - To improve student achievement in literacy with an emphasis on Six Trait Writing and the school district Literacy/Reading Program.
  2. Climate - To enhance the learning atmosphere with an emphasis on celebration of diversity, meeting the needs of all children, and implementing the "Be a Buddy, Not a Bully" program.
An effort is made to align initiatives and events to these goals such as staff development days, staff meetings, assemblies, purchases, and parental involvement. Recently two parents, Mary Beth Nylen and Christi Lanham, our Home and School president and School Family Community Partnership chair respectively, joined staff members for a two day data retreat during which we analyzed student assessment data in order to make decisions involving school improvement activities. The same two parents joined us this last summer to begin this year's SIP discussion with our superintendent, Dr. Leis.
