I hope everyone had an enjoyable, active, yet restful summer. The start of the school year has been very good for the students in P.E. class.

Again this year, the 4th and 5th grade students will be keeping a “P.E. Portfolio” in gym class. The portfolio will contain any written work and assessments that will be done in class this year. Student portfolios will be available for parents to view during Parent/Teacher Conferences. Please take advantage of this opportunity to see some of what your child is learning in P.E. class.

I am often asked at the start of each school year what are the rules and expectations for P.E. class. Please carefully read the following list:

  1. All students are required to wear gym shoes on scheduled P.E. days. Dress shoes, sandals, and boots are not proper footwear. Please check the monthly school calendar for your child’s scheduled “specials” day. When in doubt, “Wear gym shoes!” Children who forget their shoes will not be able in participate in activities for that day.
  2. A physical education setting can be in the gym or the field. In order to provide a safe and positive learning environment for your child; students must listen and learn to follow directions in class. I have high expectations for your child’s learning in physical education. Learning to listen and follow directions is essential for that learning to occur.
  3. Respect the feelings and abilities of other students. In any given class there is a broad range of abilities, experience, and skill. I expect the students to treat others the way they would like to be treated. With respect!
  4. Give your best effort! I know that children do not perform at the same level. But, I strongly encourage them to try their best and not be afraid of making mistakes.
  5. Stay on task. Students should work at the skills, challenges, and tasks that are asked of them. Some will be easy and some will be challenging.
  6. No student should deliberately attempt any action that would result in injury to themselves or another student. Your child’s safely in the P.E. class is very important.

I look forward to another exciting and wonderful year teaching your children. Please feel to contact me at school if you have any questions or concerns.

Climbing Wall Adult Volunteers Needed!

I need to find interested parents who would be willing to be trained and assist with our unit(s) on Wall Climbing. We presently have a wonderful and devoted group of parents who are helping belay students during our climbing unit. But, we need more! I would like to have 6 parents per class. Your involvement would require you to attend a training session with me and then be available during the school day to come and help the students during scheduled P.E. class times. Trained adult supervision is critical for providing a safe and enjoyable climbing environment. No previous experience necessary. I will train you in proper climbing and belaying techniques.

I hope that you would consider getting involved with this exciting and fun addition to the P.E. program and Scott School. If interested, please contact myself or Sue Halford, Climbing Wall Adult Volunteer Coordinator and the Scott School Home and School Vice President
