AQua: Art Questions and Answers

Question
:
It seems that my childs artwork usually is not based on any holiday theme.  Why is that?

Answer

While students often enjoy making art themed to a current seasonal holiday such as Halloween or Christmas, you may have noticed that your child seldom brings home holiday-themed art from Scott Schools art room.

In part, this is out of respect to the diversity of Scott School students, since many holidays are based on a cultural or religious background that not all students share.

In addition, art lessons in Scott School are built off of District 203s art curriculum. This is a multi-faceted, student-centered program that emphasizes art history, criticism, aesthetics, and production. The celebrations, rituals, and traditions of different cultures around the world provide one important area of focus for that curriculum. However, these topics are generally taught as part of art history and art theory, rather than as a lesson based on any particular holiday.

Of course, ghosts, Santas, and cupids occasionally do find their way into the art room.  However, we hope that the art history, creativity, and technique that we teach can help students understand these symbols, and take students beyond the visual vocabulary theyre most familiar with, into new and exciting areas of expression.
