Math
Decimals will
be the emphasis in math instruction for the second trimester. Students
will first be able to compare and order decimals. Then, they will be able
to convert equivalent numerical values between decimals, fractions, and
percents. Students will also master the operations of adding and
subtracting decimals. Models, computer games, and real life problems will
be used to enhance students understanding from the concrete to abstract.
Reading
Students will
continue to apply their comprehension skills regarding visualizing and
connecting. In addition, new strategies of questioning and determining
importance will be taught. Students will practice their reading in novels
and in guided reading group instruction. Please see the attached handout
for more information!
1,000 Minutes
Students who
read 1,000 minutes by December 15th will reap the reward of
being honored at a Naperville Central basketball game the evening of
January 28th. Keep reading, recording, and signing the minute sheets!
Language
Arts
Students are
becoming writers by including the 6 Traits of writing in their work! The
writing focus will shift into persuasive writing and focus on the traits
of voice and sentence fluency.
Social Science
Currently, the
learning focus is on immigration. However, after winter break, the focus
will shift to the Civil War. Watch for innovative activities during this
study, such as a letter writing activity where students assume the role of
a Civil War character. Students will write to a friend or relative played
by a parent. The friend or relative will respond in writing.
Science
After our
health unit on the respiratory system, fifth graders will become experts
with micro worlds. Live specimens will arrive in January. The living
organisms that will be observed are volvox, blepharisma, stentor, and
vinegar eels. Volvox is a fascinating spherical colony of algae. Blepharisma
is a rosy-colored microbe. Stentor is a trumpet-shaped algae eater.
Vinegar eels are active roundworms found in unpasteurized vinegar.
