MATHEMATICS

Students are investigating data currently in math.  We are examining data and statistics to determine why data may vary in different situations.  Students are collecting, analyzing, and describing data in a variety of mathematical and real world settings.

READING

Our next reading strategy that we will focus on is to infer meaning. Strategic readers are capable of drawing inferences from the text.  They utilize their background knowledge, or schemata, in combination with information from the text to draw conclusions, make critical judgments, and create unique interpretations from the text.  Inferences may occur in the form of conclusions, predictions, or new ideas.  Proficient readers infer meaning before, during, and after reading.

Batter Up!  Or should we say, Reader Up!  Each fifth grader has an opportunity to earn a home run and a free Kane County Cougars game ticket as well as other prizes.

Fifth graders are participating in Ozzie’s Reading Club, a reading incentive in connection with the Kane County Cougars.  We began this eight week program this past Monday, March 3rd.  The incentive asks students to read from a variety of genres.  Please ask your fifth graders to explain the specifics of the program.  Furthermore, we’ve invited our first grade buddies to participate in the reading incentive with us!  Please encourage your fifth grader to read and earn a home run!

LANGUAGE ARTS

Students are receiving multiple opportunities to practice their writing skills within the three main genres of writing, which include narrative, persuasive, and expository.  The purpose of narrative writing is to entertain the reader or to tell a story.  The intent of a persuasive essay is to convince your audience to agree with your point of view.  Meanwhile, an expository essay has the goal of informing the reader.

Draft after draft students are building on their strengths as writers and growing as individuals.  You can encourage some writing skills by using descriptive language in your dialogues at home.

SCIENCE

Students are busy preparing for their endangered animal partner presentations.  As “endangered animal specialists,” students are asked to research one endangered animal using books and district-approved search engines on the internet.  The students are learning specific strategies for researching, such as how to avoid plagiarism, which will be great resources as they continue their education.  They will then create a presentation to persuade their classmates to help save their animal.  One endangered animal at the Brookfield Zoo will actually be adopted by the fifth grade pod!  We will be able to visit our adopted animal, as well as all the animals that were researched, when we go to the zoo in May.

SOCIAL SCIENCE

The Confederacy has surrendered!  The Union is victorious!  This inevitable conclusion brings us to closure of the Civil War!  Students are focusing next on the Civil Rights Movement.  Despite the fact that we’re advancing a century in history, we’re going to examine the common themes and obstacles that challenged the people of our country in both time frames.  Our focus incorporates plurality and how groups unite to make changes that impact everyone.
