Here is an overview of our curriculum of our first trimester along with some other pertinent information. After reading this, if you have any questions please let us know.

Second Grade Team

Math

J Addition strategies –(Count On, Doubles, Doubles +1, Double the Skipped Number, turn arounds, and combinations of 10)

J Fluency with addition facts up to 12

J Exploring patterns when counting by 2's, 5's and 10's up to 100

J To name and know the value of money (penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half-dollar, and dollar)

J Mental computation

J Communicate about mathematical thinking through written and oral language using multiple strategies.

Reading

J Comprehension strategies:

Making Connections – relate reading to personal experiences to help understand story better (Text to self, Text to Text, and Text to World)

Fix Up Strategies - strategies used to solve reading problems (Skip & Read on, look for chunks, pictures, sounds, context clues)

Forming Sensory Images - create visual and other sensory images during and after reading

J Developing fluency and expression

J Recognize most high frequency words

Writing

J Six Traits – Ideas and Content

(Focus and details), Organization (beginning, middle, and end), and Conventions (punctuation, capitalization, and spelling)

J Expressive (Journals, reading responses, shared writing)

J Narrative (personal writing)

Speaking and Listening

J Maintain eye contact (as a speaker and a listener)

J Use appropriate voice level

J Read 75 or more minutes per week for 10 weeks

J Weekly slip is due each Monday

with student’s name and parent’s signature.

J Last slip due Monday, Nov. 12th.

J Student’s goal is to reach 750 minutes total

J If student doesn’t reach goal, they will not participate in the celebration.
