Antonio Vivaldi
(1678-1741)
"The Red Priest"
The Italian
composer and violinist Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice, Italy, on March
4, 1678, and died in 1741. He was a major figure in
Baroque music.
He entered the
priesthood, and because of his red hair, he was known as "The Red Priest."
From 1704
to 1740 he was teacher, conductor, and composer for the Ospedale della
Pietà, a Venetian conservatory and orphanage for girls, whose musical
performances were famous.
Vivaldi's
music was forgotten for a century after his death! Some of
his works were found in the 1920s, republished, and have been performed since.
His instrumental music
is the most popular with listeners. Vivaldi's greatest musical contributions are his nearly
450 concertos.
