Our singing voices...

There are four basic types of voices in choral singing: soprano, alto, tenor, and bassSolo timbres include child voices  and  adult voices. 

Ask Mom or Dad to sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" then decide whether you think they have a high voice or low voice.  Then you sing and ask your Mom or Dad to help you decide if you have a high or low voice.  Use the chart below:

  Soprano- high female

Kathleen Battle is a famous African American soprano opera singer.  She is well known for operatic roles, classical, jazz and "pop" concerts. 

     Alto- low female voice

Diana Krall, from Canada, has become THE contemporary jazz singer.  She has recently won a Grammy for piano and vocal talent on her album, "When I Look into Your Eyes".  

       Tenor - high male voice

Placido Domingo is famous for his 111 different roles in many operas and 100 recordings.  He is also an established conductor.                        

    Bass - low male voice

Barry White, R & B, Soul and Blues musician / singer recently died on July 4, 2003.   

When 3 people sing together, it's called a trio.

Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras & Luciano Pavarotti joined voices in 1990 to become the world's most famous ensemble of Opera singers.  These famous Tenors have performed in musical and athletic venues world wide.
