Opera Detective Sheet

 

Use this sheet to see how well you understand Hansel and Gretel. 

  

Act I/Scene I

     ______ upon a time, there were two children, a brother named _______ and a sister named _________.  They lived with their parents, two poor broom makers in a small house near a German ___________ .  The children were often left at home by themselves and to entertain each other they would __________ songs and play.

 

       Because Hansel and Gretel had nothing to eat all day long, they were very __________.  Trying to cheer her brother up, Gretel told him that there was a surprise for dinner that night, a jug of fresh _________ from the cow.  Then she offered to teach Hansel a folk ________. 

 

     Just as they children were finishing their dance, their ____________, Gertrude, came home from a hard day’s work.  She was very upset to find that Hansel and Gretel had been playing all day long.  Gertrude scolded the children then sent Hansel & Gretel into the forest to look for  _______.

 

      With the children gone, Gertrude began to feel bad about punishing the children.  As she was sitting down, the voice of their father, Peter, was heard. Carrying food for dinner that night, Peter,  father asked, “Where are _____________and __________?”  Gertrude confessed that she had sent them to find and gather berries.  Immediately, Peter was worried that his children were lost in the dark __________.  Remembering the story of the wicked _________, who comes out at night to look for _________________, Peter and Gertrude then ran out to look for their two children.

 

Act I/Scene II

      As the scene changes we find Hansel and Gretel lost on their adventure in the ___________.  Just as they are preparing to fall asleep, the ___________ arrives and brings in the night. Before the children lie down to rest, the sing their evening __________as fourteen _____________ gather around to watch them sleep.

 

Act II/Scene I

     The children wake the next morning remembering the dreams they had while they were sleeping, both children see a vision of a _________________house. Hansel and Gretel creep near the tempting treats on the house and begin tasting. 

 

Act II/ Scene II 

     A mysterious woman, ____________ appears and invites the children to join her in her _____________  _________.  Hansel and Gretel are not sure that they should take this woman up on her offer, but they are tempted as she cast a magic _____________.  

 

     Now that Hansel and Gretel are captive in the woman’s house, she sings a song of celebration. The children find themselves in great danger with Hansel in a ________ and poor Gretel as a servant. 

But using their brains, together they come up with a plan.  _________  Gretel asks the old woman to show her how the gingerbread cookies are made.   Gretel shoves the evil Rosina into the ________.  Now the old woman is gone and the spell is broken.  Hansel and Gretel free the other captive ______________. As all the children celebrate, __________and ________ arrive and all join together with voices united.
