Jazz Ensemble
Mr. Moore, Director
Jazz Ensemble is the premier jazz band at Naperville North. It is comprised
of an exact instrumentation of a standard Jazz Ensemble. Placement in
Jazz Ensemble is by audition only. We strongly encourage that all students
involved in Jazz also be enrolled in a curricular music class. The group
performs repertoire running the gamut of jazz styles. Students considering
this ensemble should have a strong background in jazz and improvisation.
Jazz Ensemble rehearses three afternoons a week immediately after school
and does conflict with athletics, so students will need to make a choice
in participation. Jazz Ensemble is a very active performing group, participating
in several area Jazz festivals, competitions, the 40’s Dance,
school concerts, and “gigs” outside school. In the spring
of 2000, the Jazz Ensemble was honored as one of fifteen finalist bands
in the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival, where they traveled to New
York to perform at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

Jazz Lab
Mr. Van Kley, Director
Jazz Lab is the training ensemble for the NNHS jazz program. Jazz Lab
is open to any student, no audition needed, all are welcome. There are
no limits on instrumentation or the size of the group. It is intended
for those who are beginners in jazz, those who do not play a jazz instrument
(including french horn, clarinet, flute, etc.) or who are learning a
secondary instrument (double), or winter and spring athletes. Jazz lab
meets for one evening rehearsal each week (plus sectionals). Though
the group performs repertoire in varying jazz styles, swing and blues
are stressed. Lab performs at least two scheduled school concerts per
year, the 40’s dance, and occasional outside performances, including
the New Trier Jazz Festival.
