This basic course presents the fundamentals of the language and a practical application of Latin to English through vocabulary building and word derivation. The course also introduces the student to stories, readings in Latin, dealing with mythology, Roman life and customs, heroes and statesmen. There are also a number of engaging projects to enhance student learning.
In the first semester, the basic grammar of the first year is reviewed and new grammar is added. Emphasis is on beginning to read Latin stories of history and mythology. In the second semester, the basic reading material is taken from supplementary readers. Word studies in preparation for ACT-SAT testing are continued in both semesters.
The student's ability to read and translate Latin is expanded to include the major authors, Cicero and Virgil in alternating years. This alternation allows for a full four year program. In the Cicero year the major emphasis is on reading prose with the inclusion of authors, such as Sallust, Pliny and later (medieval) Latin. In the Virgil year the concentration is on poetry with inclusion of authors, such as Horace, Ovid and Catullus. This course may be repeated once.
