FRENCH I
In French, students begin to develop language skills for a French-speaking environment through frequent conversational activities. These include ordering in a restaurant, greeting friends, shopping for clothes, and talking about one’s family, hometown, and daily activities. Students practice listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Videos and CD’s supplement the basic text and workbook.
FRENCH II
Level II continues to build cultural knowledge and skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing on topics of daily life in France. Topics include leisure time activities, entertainment, sports, health, food, the house, and one’s daily routine. Videos and CD’s supplement the basic text and workbook.
FRENCH III
Level III continues to build communication skills. Students learn to express their feelings on a variety of subjects. Topics include fashion, travel, vacation, shopping, and driving a car. Students are introduced to short readings and a French film.
FRENCH IV
Fourth year French students are encouraged to speak only French in the classroom. Emphasis is on the improvement of speaking, reading and writing skills. Students continue to develop their knowledge of vocabulary and grammatical structures. Compositions and discussions are based on contemporary readings and classical literature.
FRENCH V
This is an advanced course conducted in French, designed to develop fluency of communication with increased linguistic accuracy. Students will develop greater proficiency in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), while deepening insight into francophone culture. The curriculum will include a continued study to French history and culture, literary selections, cinema, and other mass media. Students will have the opportunity to attain a level of proficiency which will prepare them to take the Advanced Placement Language examination and/or other college placement exams.
