Chris Seger has been teaching art at Naperville North High School since 1992. She
graduated "magna cum laude" from University of Hartford,
Connecticut in 1982. She earned her M.F.A. in 1984 from the School
of the Art Institute of Chicago and has since focused her talents
in the areas of design, photography, drawing, painting and electronic
art. She worked as a college desktop publishing instructor and corporate computer graphics artist before pursuing her career
as a high school educator. She currently teaches traditional art as well
as digital art and animation. Mrs. Seger enjoys it when students develop their skills and grow to take full command of the art process. Creativity, versatility, hard work, and quality are ingredients for success. These are also important beyond high school because most professions,
in part, rely on the creative process. Mrs. Seger encourages those who do not believe they have talent. She helps them move on from their mistakes and grow.

Janell Matas
graduated from
Northern Illinois University in Art Education in 1997. She taught
at St. Charles and Streamwood High Schools for six years. She recently
completed an MA in sculpture from Northern Illinois University.
Her artworks communicate issues important to her: self-image, identity,
social success dictated by career choice, motherhood, and society's
obsession with materialism. Her sculptures also express things such
as family/career balance, spirituality, prioritizing, and coping
with stress. At NNHS, Mrs. Matas currently teaches Drawing 1, 2
and Advanced Placement Art History. She values the pursuit of knowledge,
experimentation, and the exploration of personal interests. She
feels fortunate to do what she loves as well as help students benefit
from self-expression and visual awareness. Students learn to problem-solve,
use critical thinking skills, and develop unique and complex ideas.
Mrs. Matas uses a holistic approach to teaching that includes art
history, art criticism and aesthetics. Skills learned in class help
students throughout their lives, regardless of the fields they may
go into.

Tom Arlis has
been teaching art since 1976 when he did his student teaching
and was then hired at Washington Junior High. This lead to a variety
of positions including sixth grade art at Jefferson Junior High;
drawing, design concepts and humanities at Naperville Central
High School; and in 1988, drawing and photography at Naperville
North High School. Mr. Arlis earned his bachelors of art from
Western Illinois University and his masters from Northern Illinois
University. He has developed curriculum for Traditional Photography
1, 2 and Studio, Digital Photography, Advanced Placement Art History
and Humanities (an interdisciplinary course offered at NCHS).
He enjoys teaching all the levels of photography, traditional
and digital. He is inspired by family and his world travels. Believing
in hard work and inner vision, he advices students to take the
time to look at the world with a creative eye and says, "There
is a big difference between sight and vision. Don't study photography
for the grade, but for the skills you will use the rest of your
life."
