Textbook – World History Journey Across Time: The Early Ages

 

The sixth grade curriculum covers ancient and medieval history.  It integrates history, geography, political systems, economic systems and behavioral sciences.  Social Science is a means to teach students to think critically and responsibly.

 

Trimester 1

            Theme-Survival

Guiding Question: How and Why Do People Adapt?

·        Choices -What choices do people have to make to survive?

·        Groups – What are the advantages of living in-groups?

·        Physical Environment – How did physical environment effect patterns of   

         development and settlement?

·        Structure – For what reasons/purposes do groups of people organize?

·        Beliefs – How did their beliefs explain their world?  How do beliefs effect

          people lives?

·        Innovations – How do people solve problems?

Trimester 2

           

        Theme – Contributions

Guiding Questions: What Makes a Civilization Thrive?

·        Leadership – Why is leadership necessary? Who has the power and how did

         they get it?  What makes an effective leader?

·       Culture – What is culture?  What enables culture to advance?

·       Connections – What do successful civilizations have in common?  How was

        culture spread?  What did civilizations inherit and build upon?  What did

        civilizations leave as their legacy?

·      Organization – How are successful civilizations organized?  What roles do

        groups and individuals have within an organization?

Trimester 3

Theme – Change

Guiding Questions: What Causes Change?

·      Movement – What causes movement of people, goods and ideas?  What is the

        impact of movement?

·      Conflict – What causes different types of conflict?  How do people respond to

        conflict?  How do people respond to conflict?  How do the consequences of

        conflict lead to change?

·      Ideas – What causes people to change their ideas?  What results from change

       of ideas?  What makes an idea powerful?
