Attire

All students are to follow the dress code requirements for Kennedy Junior High.  The following attire is unacceptable:  revealing clothes, undergarments showing outside of clothing, offensive or inappropriate logos, etc.  On lab days clothing should be appropriate for the scheduled activity as outlined in the safety contract.

Compensation

Students will be compensated in the form of points.  Everyone has the opportunity to earn the same number of points each “pay” (grading) period.  Students will earn points commensurate with the quality of their work.  In our world, higher level job positions earn more money.  Likewise, higher level of work quality will earn more points.  All assignments should be completed thoroughly in accordance with the directions and using your personal best.  Each assignment has a ceiling of possible points to earn.  There are many tasks that may not seem directly compensated by points, but are all a part of the student’s overall responsibility on the job.  Assuredly, these tasks (i.e. being prepared for class) are indirectly compensated.  Moreover, each student is expected to keep a record of his/her earnings for each “pay” period.  A Grade Tracking Sheet will be provided for this purpose. Mrs. Frost may occasionally announce opportunities to earn bonus points.

Late homework assignments will be accepted 1 day late (the next school day) at a 50% point reduction.  After 1 day late, late homework will not be redeemable for points.  Larger point assignments, such as lab reports and projects, will be penalized a score reduction of 10% per day late.  NO NOTES from parents will be accepted for broken computers or last minute plans that prevent projects from being submitted on time.  PLAN AHEAD.  Long term assignments will be assigned with ample time for quality completion.  Employers do not care to hear and will not accept excuses.  Please note any projects due the day before an extended school break will suffer a greater penalty than 1 day late if submitted the day school resumes after the break.

Each trimester you will receive a “Late Pass” which should be saved for unforeseen circumstances.  This pass will “buy” you a one school day reprieve to submit an assignment without point penalty.  On homework this can save you from half credit, and on a long-term assignment this can rescue you from any unforeseen problems (ie: computer) and spare you the 10% reduction in points for being 1 day late.  Be advised that the late pass only covers 1 day late; if you submit a project 3 days late with a late pass then your score will be penalized 20%. Also, the late pass can’t be redeemed unless it is submitted with the late work.  Save unused late passes to earn bonus points at the end of the trimester.

 Attendance

In the event you arrive late to class without a pass, record the tardy in the red “Oops” binder and avoid disruption of the lesson underway.  The first 3 tardies per trimester are excused.  Tardies 4 and 5 result in a morning detention and note home. The 6th tardy and any thereafter will each result in an office referral.

In accordance with Kennedy’s absentee policy, if you are absent from science class x number of days, you have x number of school days to submit make up work and make up missed labs or quizzes/tests.  Please note that some labs may not be offered for make-up and it will be necessary to obtain data from a colleague, ideally your lab partner, to write the lab report.  Obviously, being absent is a hindrance to your overall success in science, but at times cannot be avoided.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to determine what work you missed.  This can be accomplished several ways:  1) www.schoolnotes.com;   2) check the “missed assignments” binder when you return; 3) consult with colleagues; and

4) consult with Mrs. Frost.  To get worksheets, handouts, or graded work you missed see Mrs. Frost.   Copy notes from your lab partner or the missed assignments binder.  Be sure to schedule lab or quiz/test make-ups upon your return.  If an assignment is due on a day you are absent, be prepared to submit it the day you return or it’s considered late.  Kennedy’s absentee policy does not apply to work assigned prior to an absence.

Performance Reviews

Each student will receive a performance review at midterm and report card times.  Each student will complete a self-evaluation of progress at these times as well, which will include setting goals.  This is a time for students to reflect and reevaluate how to improve performance in science and grow as a student.  Each and every person in this classroom has good things to offer to the class and every student should strive to accomplish his/her personal best.   At any time Mrs. Frost or the student can schedule a time to discuss performance.  The goal is to experience success and growth in science class. J

Conduct

At all times students are expected to demonstrate good manners, appropriate, and safe conduct while on the job. Derogatory remarks towards others have no place in the work environment and will not be tolerated.  Respect of self and others is needed for all of us to complete our work and have an enjoyable work day.  Every person should take responsibility for his/her own actions.

Each student at Kennedy is expected to demonstrate the 6 pillars of character:

RESPECT     RESPONSIBILITY     CITIZENSHIP    CARING

FAIRNESS       TRUSTWORTHINESS

Students whose behavior is otherwise will be dealt with on an individual basis.
