French Level 1
Bienvenue! Welcome to the level 1 French
program at Kennedy Junior High School. This is a two-year program
at the middle school which will articulate with level 2 at the high school.
A proficiency test, grades, and the teacher's recommendation will determine
promotion to level 2. Students must complete both the 7th and 8th
grade courses to continue with level 2 at the high school.
Textbook
Heath series Discovering French.
This is the same series used at the high school.
Students who qualify are expected to be able to make the transition to
level 2.
Curriculum Goals
-
Communication: To use the target language to communicate within
and beyond the classroom setting. Students will acquire skills in
listening, speaking, reading and writing.
-
Cultures: To gain knowledge, understanding and appreciation
of other cultures (customs, arts, literature, history and geography).
-
Connections: To use the target language to make connections
and reinforce knowledge and skills across disciplines. (Students
will be expected to understand and correctly use many grammar concepts
such as articles, nouns, verbs (infinitive and conjugated forms), prepositions,
subject pronouns, adjectives (agreement and placement), adverbs, and the
concept of number and gender.)
-
Comparisons: To develop insight into the nature of language
and culture. Students will compare the target language and culture
with their own.
A Final Thought
Although students will not be fluent upon completion of
grades 7 and 8 at the middle school, successful students will be able to
converse about everyday situations and will also be able to read and write
French at the novice level. Please carefully consider the commitment
necessary for the full-year foreign language courses. Many students
find that the courses become more difficult in the second year of study
and require greater effort.
