Battle of the Books!

Battle of the Books is a literature enrichment program open to fourth and fifth grade students throughout the district. The goals of this program are to encourage elementary students to read quality books and to read as widely as possible in their leisure time.  The district Battle of the Books committee provides a list of forty children’s books, which is the basis for the district’s annual Battle of the Books competition in the spring.  Each student is given a list representing top quality books at a wide variety of reading levels and different literary genres that are rich in content.

Literacy Club

From October through February fourth and fifth grade students have the opportunity to attend meetings of the Highlands Literary Club which is held every other Wednesday in the LRC after school.  In the Literary Club, students listen to and present books talks, discuss books, watch videotapes related to book topics, and participate in games and other activities related to the books being discussed.  The Literacy Club is facilitated by Battle of the Books coaches, Mrs. Burns and Mrs. Keith.

The Battle

In March students may choose to try for a position on the Highlands School Battle of the Books teams by taking a test which asks questions on all of the forty books.  A team of five fourth grade students and a team of five fifth grade students are selected from the scores on the test.  These teams compete with other district schools in April at the Battle of the Books competition.
