Habits of Mind

Introduction

Efficient learners are ones who are self-aware and self-regulating.  They are continually seeking ways to assess and modify their own thinking and behavior in order to find solutions and new perspectives.

The Habits of Mind are 16 cognitive strategies that all efficient thinkers utilize when presented with a problem of which the answers are not immediately apparent.  The general idea behind the Habits is that thinking itself becomes the core of student endeavor.  The art of thinking and the study of efficient thinking behaviors are foundational to all learning.  With this in mind, the general subjects (math, science, literacy, etc.) eventually flow out of this foundation and enable us as learners to broaden our metacognitive repertoire with strategies that will help us to become more adaptive and solve problems more efficiently in the real world.
