Creation of Giraffe

In the spring of 2001, Elmwood's baby giraffe was donated to us by our business partner, Dommermuth, Brestal, Cobine & West, LTD. The giraffe came to use as he had been "born," pure white. Sixteen  4th and 5th graders created a design that they painted onto our giraffe. When they were finished the giraffe was put on display at the Riverwalk adjacent to the law firm's office.

Pictured are: students who painted the giraffe, Naperville's mayor, two law firm representatives, and an Elmwood teacher and administrator.

Elmwood is very fortunate that Dommermuth, Brestal, Cobine & West, LTD. succeeded in securing SOAR for Elmwood  at the United Way of Naperville's "Reaching for New Heights" auction held on September 14.  SOAR was officially presented to the Elmwood School community on Monday, October 1. Two representatives of the law firm were special guests at the assembly.  They presented SOAR to the Elmwood students. Thirty-eight SOAR honorees were recognized at that time.  The assembly concluded with everyone joining together to say the EAGLE Rap and the pledge of allegiance

Our giraffe is named SOAR after Elmwood's "Soar Like Eagles" citizenship program. The six attributes associated with the program were painted on his spots.  Wings, to help him SOAR Like an Eagle were created from student handprints.

SOAR in the Courtyard

Elmwood has a very special location for SOAR.  The courtyard allows SOAR to be seen by all students. SOAR is a "hit" with the students!
