                    Dear Parents,

The entire staff of Elmwood School welcomes you and your child/ren to the 2002-2003 school year!  Your child can look forward to a school year of engaged learning that addresses all of the areas of growth so important for each and every student; the academic, social and emotional domains.

The District 203 vision for the present and the future of education in our community articulates what we as a district and Elmwood School, in particular, are all about… “Building a Passion for Lifelong Learning”.   Our four statements of belief continue to drive the goals that we endeavor to achieve:
1. Excellence in Education
Of primary focus is the continual, bilateral analysis of the quality of the work provided to our students: What we are asking our students to do and the work that our students are doing.  Teachers and students will continue to integrate the Ten Attributes of Quality Work (Phillip Schlechty) into learning activities, ensuring that students spend their time in meaningful work. Teachers will also reinforce marker behaviors of engaged learning that they notice in their students.

2.   The Dignity and Uniqueness of Each Individual
The Elmwood staff nurtures a physically and emotionally safe and mentally stimulating atmosphere in order that students of all levels, abilities, needs and cultural backgrounds can reach their maximum potential.

3. Responsible Citizenship
Effective instruction and quality student work builds in our students the knowledge, skills and understandings that enable them to solve problems, think critically and work collaboratively in an age-appropriate setting.  As they grow in their abilities, they will be prepared to function effectively and efficiently in our democratic society. Our SOAR like EAGLES program recognizes those members of our learning community who go “above and beyond’ to model responsible citizenship and contribute to the learning environment that we value in our school.

4. Partnership with the Community
The Elmwood School staff believes in working in concert with our parents and the community-at-large to offer a wide range of experiences for our students.  Looking to our students’ future educational settings, we foster linkages with Lincoln Jr. High and Naperville Central High School.  A variety of business partners not only support our efforts and programs, but also provide additional opportunities and venues for Elmwood students to share their learning and talents.

Through the combined efforts of our staff, students, parents, and community your children will have rewarding and successful experiences each and every year at Elmwood School. We look forward to, encourage, appreciate and value your exceptional involvement and support.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Laura Peterson, Principal
