Science/HealthThree major units are included in the fourth grade science program:
During the first trimester students will first be "looking at" and studying insects. This is a "bugging time." At Elmwood while fourth graders collect and observe insects. Later, insect models are created. In the mystery powder unit students follow a "scientific method" approach while examining and experimenting with different powders. This "hands on" provides opportunities for fourth graders to investigate, ask questions, form hypothesis, perform experiments, make observations, and draw conclusions.

As part of district's 203 technology plan, all fourth graders are involved in a six week computer keyboarding class. Throughout the school year students receive computer time where they type and print stories they have written in class. Hopefully, typing skills are maintained and improved by using these school computers. Students also use Power Point, Microsoft Word, Excel, Inspiration, and Timeliner. The internet is also used for many projects.
During the first trimester fourth graders will read a general overview of the United States. The United States five regions will be studied. Map Skills include working with map scales, latitude, longitude lines, compasses, and map grids. This will be accomplished through the use of social studies books, trade books, and audio visual materials.

Writing skills are important to Elmwood students. Much of our writing will occur within other subject areas-- Reading, Social Studies, and Science. Writing skills are practiced while students work with these required writing genres:
A daily oral language program is also to teach grammar and writing mechanics.
ReadingThe fourth grade Houghton Mifflin reading series "Dinosauring" provides for reading as well as writing experiences. This reading series is a compromise of seven themes covering genre such as:
Each theme is supported by two paperback theme books-- one for easy reading, another for average\challenging reading. We believe reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking are closely interrelated and interdependent. The Houghton Mifflin Reading series provides many opportunities for students to creatively.
"Spell It-Write!" gives children a chance to get out of their seats and interact with each other. The students' texts provide practice activities as well as games and manipulatives. The students get their own personal spelling goals and then chart their own success.
The first trimester at Elmwood is a busy time. At times our projected curriculum and some topics may extend into the second trimester. We hope you find the information to be helpful in understanding your child's educational program.
