Special Events and Programs


Kindergarten Roundup is held in the spring. Children who will be in kindergarten in the fall and their parents are invited to meet the teachers, hear about the kindergarten experience, and get acquainted with the school.
Elmwood Eagles Flyer is a monthly communication sent home to each family. It includes a monthly calendar of upcoming events occurring in the school.
Vision and Hearing Screening is held yearly by the Health Department. Children in targeted grade levels are screened for difficulties in vision and hearing.
Parent Orientation. Held in August or early September, parents have an opportunity to meet with their child's classroom teacher. A brief overview of the year's activities as well as the teacher's expectations will be given. The principal begins the evening with a brief meeting that focuses on the Elmwood School goals and an introduction to the year by the Home and School President.
School Pictures: Taken early in the school year and then again in the spring. Parents have the opportunity to purchase pictures of their child as well as a classroom picture. Photos of the children are also included in a yearbook which is available for purchase later in the year.
Halloween Parade: The children have a chance to parade their costumes outdoors (weather permitting), sing pumpkin carols around the flagpole, and attend a short party given by the room mothers.
Winter Program: Each grade level, under the direction of our music teacher, performs a variety of seasonal songs. This entertaining program is held during the day in the weeks before Winter break is extremely well attended.  Arrive early for good seats. Some grade levels have a tea following the program.
Open House: Held in December - Your child will have the opportunity to show off their work and their classroom as well as take the family on tours of their favorite areas in the school. 
5th Grade Safety Patrol: 5th grade students have the opportunity to be members of the Elmwood Safety Patrol. Their mission is to help students to safely cross the intersections near the school. 

Environmental Club: Open to 3rd grade students, this activity educates the children about recycling and lifelong habits that help to protect the environment. This project is sponsored by a Home & School mini-grant.
Outdoor Education: An opportunity for 5th graders held at the Lorado Taft facility in Oregon, IL. Students learn about the out-of-doors during a two day experience. There is an added fee associated with this program.
Too Good for Drugs Program: Drug abuse resistance program held for 5th graders by the Naperville Police Department.
Elmwood Literature Club: Weekly meetings for 4th and 5th graders who enjoy reading. Activities include sharing and discussing selected pieces of literature. If a student wants to try-out for the Elmwood Battle of the Books team they must be a member of this group. This project is sponsored by a Home & School mini-grant.
Student Council: Elmwood's Student Council promotes the welfare of others, our community, and the world through projects.  We strive to be active and involved members.
Jump Rope for Heart: Elmwood School's 24th annual Jump Rope for Heart will take place in February. Last year the students raised over $5,500 for the American Heart Association. This event is open to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students.

Game Club: Weekly meetings are held in the first grade classrooms.  Students enjoy time with classmates and friends.  Students learn some new games and learn to be a cooperative participant.
