Respectful-Abe Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was born
in a log cabin in Kentucky. Abe worked very hard throughout his childhood,
both at home and in school. However, Abraham only attended formal
schooling for one year. Abraham was eager to learn, so he taught
himself.
When Abraham was older,
he became a lawyer so he could fight for people's rights. A few years
later, Abraham ran for president. The first time he ran, he lost,
but he was persistent and he won on his second attempt.
While Abraham was in office,
the Civil War erupted in America. While the war was fought over many
issues, one of the main issues was slavery. Many people who lived
in the south felt slavery was good because they had fields where the slaves
could work in for no money. Many people in the north felt slavery
was wrong. While Abe said that he thought America needed to be either
for slavery or against slavery, at the end of the war he issued the Emancipation
Proclamation which outlawed slavery forever!
Abe Lincoln, like Martin
Luther King Jr., felt that every man and woman should be respected and
treated equally.
