Annie Sullivan-Accountable
Helen Keller was special.
She was blind and deaf. That meant she could not hear the laughter
of children or see beautiful butterflies fly through the sky. That
also meant that she never learned to talk.
When Helen was almost seven
years old, her parents hired a teacher named Annie Sullivan. At first,
Helen did not like Annie because she made Helen work very hard, but soon
she would begin to understand that Annie was trying to help her.
Annie taught Helen how
to speak with her hands. She would hand Helen a doll and then spell
D-O-L-L in her hand. Again, Helen did not understand and became frustrated.
Annie did not give up. She continued to teach her any words that
she could. B-O-O-K, C-A-N-D-Y, H-A-T, and many others.
One day, Helen put her
hands under a water spout and felt the cool liquid run onto her hands.
Annie spelled W-A-T-E-R. Helen became excited, she understood!
She began to spell out every word she knew!
Because Annie Sullivan
was accountable, Helen could count on her to teach her every word she needed
to know and never give up!
