Conservation History
In 1992, Butch was taken to Laura D'Alessandro, who also works as a conservator at the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute for restoration. Laura took pictures and worked on putting Butch back into respectable condition and returned him to Naperville Central looking better than he had in probably 2,000 years! Principal Tom Paulsen contributed $1,500 of special funds for the process. A parent volunteer constructed a special "coffin" for transporting the mummy to the city.
Below are pictures of what Butch looked like during the process of conservation - before, during, and after.
To help you appreciate the change, take a look at these images side by side. On the left is Butch before and after repairs and on the right is Butch ten years later!
