By 7 a.m. TV crews were in the parking lot. |
"The Mummy Road Show" crew began
filming kids coming into NCHS. |

Ron Beckett meets Jim Galanis who is one of two
Ancient History teachers who work with Butch, the NCHS mummy. |
The film crew interviews more kids. |
Observing the filming were Tom Bohdan
(librarian), Jim Galanis, and Tom Paulsen (principal). |
Ron's first look at Butch in his new mahogany
display case. |
Every move and reaction needed to be recorded. |
A close look at Butch. |
A closer look at the cartonage on the mummy. |
Tom Henneberry (the other Ancient History
teacher) waits with Butch for a live TV interview with Kristy
Finch from FOX Think In The Morning - WFLD-TV. |
Kristy Finch & Tom wait for broadcast time -
8:15 a.m. |
Kristy, Tom and the
National Geographic PR representative Nord Wennerstrom discuss
what will be covered in the interview. |
Tom gets a microphone just before air time. |
Ron gets hooked up as well. |
Tom & Ron live on FOX TV. |
A close up |
After the live show Kristy interviewed Ron about
his other mummy experiences for broadcast later in the day. |
She did ask some unusual questions! |
Between the morning filming and the next event -
bringing Butch to a classroom - Ron and Tom ponder how to set up
the room. |
Crew equipment had to be hauled up three floors
and unpacked. |
Crew stuff opened and partially unpacked. |
The next important event is the arrival of Jerry
Conlogue, Ron's partner and co-host of The Mummy Road Show. |
Even loading and moving Jerry's stuff gets
filmed...packing it onto a cart. |
Moving the cart into the building. |
The crew discusses filming the equipment move
through quiet halls or waiting until passing period to get lots of students all around. |
They decide to wait for passing period. |
And they wait.... |
Then the bell rings and kids surround
them. All that could be seen was the moving microphone above
their heads! |
By 9:30 a.m. everyone is ready to get Butch out
of his case and into the classroom. But they had to wait for
the carpenters. |
No one at school knew how
to open the case! (Click image to see video!) So the
carpenters opened and moved the case. |

Everyone had to watch... |

...and be filmed! |
Any comment made by students was filmed and
recorded. |

Dan Jorgensen was interviewed. |
Tom Kayes was too. |
Once the case was removed, Butch had
to be moved out of the Social Studies office, down the hall, and
into room 225. That took some discussion and maneuvering! |
In the classroom, Jerry
talked to the kids about what they hoped to see and find. |
Then he explained
about the x-rays they wanted to take. He compared the ones
taken at University of Chicago with what they hoped to
get. |
Next, he had them help
him build the portable x-ray machine he travels with.! |
Since it could be
configured any way they needed it to be they built it to stand
over Butch |
Everybody got to help. |
Every moment was a
teachable one. |
Ron & Jerry often
explained why they were doing things. |
Teacher Jim explained a
few things -- especially about Butch and the markings on his
cartonnage. |

Teacher Tom also talked
to the kids about the significance of things. |
There were also moments
of preparation -- and wearing one of Jerry's bandanas! (It
was traded around all day.) |
There are always new
things to hear about. |
Some things take
concentration and close up looks. |
Nord Wennerstrom &
Tom Bohdan compare notes while the kids are listening to Tom, Jim,
Ron & Jerry. |
