The Chronology

Friday, February 8, and

Saturday, February 9, 2002

Every step of the process from arriving at the school to actually x-raying and exploring Butch's body cavity with the endoscope was filmed (sometimes more than once) in preparation for an episode of "The Mummy Road Show" series.  Comments and observations by students were particularly noteworthy.

7:00 a.m. Ron & film crew arrive.  Film and interview arriving NCHS students.  Also film Ron's first viewing of Butch in case outside social studies department offices.

8:45 a.m. Preparations for moving Butch from social studies office to classroom for the day.

10:00 a.m. Students enlisted to help Jerry build portable x-ray machine which will be used to obtain special shots not taken previously.  It is hoped these x-rays will reveal clues as to what might still be in the body cavity.
12:00 p.m. Press Conference with local newspaper and television reporters.
12:45 p.m. Lunch!
1:30 p.m. Back to Butch, x-rays, and discussion of what might be found when Butch's wrappings are opened on Saturday and the endoscope is used.

3:30 p.m. Butch and all equipment must be packed and moved to Social Studies office as room will be used for ACT testing Saturday morning.

Saturday, February 9, 2002

1:00 p.m. All members of the cast & crew gather at NCHS in room 225.  Gear must be unpacked and Butch moved back into room.  (ACT exam was given in room earlier in the day.)
2:30 p.m. Laura D'Allisandro sets up equipment for unwrapping Butch for his "examination" by endoscope.
3:15 p.m. Laura begins by removing the net covering and wrapping from Butch's right shoulder area where a hole exists under the wrappings.  This is the insertion point for the endoscope.
3:30 p.m. Ron begins the body cavity search.  Endoscope progress is monitored by everyone on a TV monitor and Ron's endoscope camera tapes it all.  Body cavity is not empty as expected.  There is a wrapped object, probably organs, and some lung tissue is still in evidence.
4:00 p.m. Ron cautiously retrieves several samples of lung tissue with assistance from Laura, Jerry, and several students.  The NGS camera is right in the center of things filming every turn and comment.
4:30 p.m. Discussion ensues on how easily it might be to retrieve a tooth for DNA study.  The endoscope is unable to go from the body cavity into the skull.  Laura suggests going directly into the jaw.  She cuts wrappings on left side of jaw where the teeth are clearly exposed.
4:45 p.m. Ron and Jerry attempt to retrieve tooth.  One breaks off above the crown, but another one is also accessible.  Using a scalpel, Ron carves tooth from almost petrified jaw bone.  Everyone holds their breath during this procedure!
5:00 p.m. Mr. Galanis has to leave for a family commitment.  Everyone else is still keeping both eyes glued to the tooth extraction process.
5:15 p.m. An entire tooth -- root intact -- is extracted and placed in sample bottle.  Everyone can breathe again!
5:30 p.m. Things are being cleaned up and put back together.  The show footage is finished; just background and "atmosphere" taping to be done.  Film crew restocks film cartridges and heads for school fieldhouse and interviews with students arriving for the winter dance.
6:00 p.m.  Most students have left.  Mr. Henneberry, Ron & Jerry are putting the room back in order, returning Butch to the Social Studies office for security, Laura packs her materials to return to Chicago.  It's a wrap!
