John Murr
Class of 1967

Alumni Recognition Award, 2006

The scene was all too familiar. A bright yellow school bus was parked in the street next to the Naperville Central baseball field. A lively and jovial man walked out with his umpire uniform on. After a long day of transporting students to and from Naperville Central, John Murr was about to umpire for the NCHS baseball team. John’s passion and dedication to the Naperville Community is why he has earned the honor of being an NCHS Alumni Recognition Recipient.

When John Murr graduated from Naperville Central in 1967, his legacy at NCHS was far from over.  Since his graduation, John has engraved his tradition into NCHS athletics and into the Naperville Community.

  • Naperville Police Department Meritorious Award
  • VFW Law Enforcement Officer of the Year
  • Citizens Appreciate Police Award (CAP)
  • City of Naperville George Pradel Award
  • Illinois Police Life Saving Award
  • DuPage County Police Association Valor Award
  • City of Naperville Employee of the Year

But his police work only scrapes the surface of his bountiful and fulfilling career. His umpiring and bus driving careers have allowed John to give back to the community that he helped build. John’s favorite memories at Central were attending the football and basketball games on Friday nights, so he volunteers as a sideline official for every NCHS home football game.

John now has a loving wife, Cathy, who was also an NCHS graduate of 1976. They have three sons – John, Jeffery, and Jason – all whom have graduated from NCHS. He also has two grandchildren, Nikki and Alex.

John Murr is a paramount example of what it means to be a community member. He wishes all students success and happiness in the future.
