How to Study

"How to Flunk a Class"

Study tips - find what works best for you!

Chunk it! Study in little daily chunks instead of trying to learn everything in one monster session before a quiz or test.

Take notes in your own words. Copying class notes word-for-word won't help you remember new material nearly as well as your own words can.

Ask for Help. It's okay if you don't understand new material the first time around. Much of what we learn is new and unlike anything you've seen before, so if it doesn't click right away ask me, a tutor, a friend, or try an online tutorial site.

Plan Ahead. Days off, sports, clubs, family events... you live a busy life so it's worth reviewing your calendar every week to make sure you're staying on top of everything you're trying to juggle.

Visualize Success. "I'll never understand this!" or "This is too difficult!" How many times have you told yourself that when facing new, complex material? Sad thing is if you believe it, it will probably come true. Instead think about all the complicated things you have learned to do - run your computer, master a second (or third) language, master a difficult skill or video game, even drive a car. Think about how you learned to succeed before and apply the same techniques. Believe you can, and it becomes easier to succeed.

Challenge Your Brain. Read a college level text on a future career interest. Pick up a newspaper and brush up on current events. Even try the "expert" level at a new game. Challenges help us jump start our thinking!

Teach a Classmate. If you understand a topic try helping a classmate who is having trouble. If you have to explain a topic you actually learn it at a much deeper level.

Stretch. No kidding. If you are sitting in the same position for too long your mind may wander and you're more likely to get bored. Get up, take a break, move around, and rejuvenate!

Make Connections. When we study something new in class, try and relate it to something you use every day. Seeing lecture topics in action will help you remember them.

Change is Good. In a studying rut? Mix it up and embrace a new study technique or find a different place to study. New year, new habits!
