ABOUT this course

Algebra Support is a new course being offered to those students who passed Introduction to Algebra but did not do very well. This course is designed to help them succeed in Algebra I. This class will be taught in conjuction with Algebra I. We will be reviewing the same topics covered in Algebra I class. We will be spending a considerable amount of time in the computer lab (Room 60) using programs that will help them to master these Algebra topics. We will address students’ deficiencies in mathematical concepts as well as learn study skills and test taking skills. We will also learn some logic through puzzle use.

MATERIALS needed:

NOTEBOOK – 3 Ring Binder (can share with Algebra I class notebook)

You MUST HAVE:

            1. 3 Dividers – notes, homework, returned papers

            2. Loose –Leaf paper

            3. Graph paper

HOMEWORK

Homework will be assigned randomly throughout each week but graded when assigned. All homework assignments should be considered individual work. It is worth 3 points daily (3 pts for 100% completion, 2 pts for 75% completion, 1 pt for 50% completion). Reasonable work must be shown in order to earn full credit. Late homework can earn 1 pt for 100% completion.

We will focus most homework efforts on the homework assigned in the Algebra I class.

GRADING

Semester grades will be a cumulative point total based on the following: homework, notebook checks, computer work, projects, quizzes, and tests.  Quizzes and tests may contain a calculator and non-calculator portion. Quizzes and tests MUST BE completed in pencil. The semester grade will be based on 80% coursework in Quarters 3 and 4; 20%

semester exam.

Homework                           30%

Computer Labs                  10%

Notebooks checks             5%

Quizzes                                  15%

Tests                                       40%

The semester grade will still be based on 80% coursework in Quarters 3 and 4; 20% semester exam.

Grading Scale

A  100%-90%            B  89%-80%                C 79%-70%                D 69%-60%                F 59% and below

Please know that I try to update grades once a week (usually on Sunday) to iParent. This is an excellent tool to see how your child is progressing in my class.

MAKE-UP WORK

All homework and/or activities assigned prior to an absence must be turned in the day the student returns to school. All assignments given during a student absence will be given 2 days to complete. It is the student’s responsibility to make up missed tests and/or quizzes within one week of their return or a ZERO grade will be assigned.

EXTRA HELP

I will be available from 10-10:30a and 12:30-1:00p in the Math Office daily. Since I am a part-time teacher at NCHS, it is important that you make an appointment to see me during those times. I can also be reached thru email. I welcome and highly encourage you to ask me for help.
