The Humanities Department enriches ones understanding of human culture.  Thus the study of any human culture must include a basic understanding of the historical development of the culture's political, economic, and social mind sets.  However, a more thorough understanding is possible by learning about a culture's habit, values, beliefs, and expression by way of aesthetic awareness.

The Humanities organizational structure places emphasis on the belief that every man (and woman) is an artist and that art is not production, but rather a state of mind and an attitude of life, which is open to every person, not just to the trained "artist".

The Humanities are concerned with the condition, quality, and improvement of the collective human being and the culture in which she exists.

To these ends, the NCHS Humanities Department endeavors to provide students with a broad and rich education that encompasses these goals.

Essential Questions

In everything the HUMANITIES DEPARTMENT does:

o        How can we every day be Student-Focused and continue to maintain our level of academic vigor?

o        How can Data inform our instruction?

o        Quality Assessment Data provides clear feedback necessary to improve teaching strategies and student learning.

o        Given the District 203 Vision of a High School Graduate and the Naperville Central focus on “Community Contributor”, I will:

        - Contribute to NCHS outside of my curriculum.

        - Develop classroom communities that promote respect and tolerance

          for all students.

        - Celebrate the accomplishments of NCHS staff and students.

        - Model good citizenship with each other.

        - Demonstrate Central Pride.

In everything the FINE ARTS group does:  Assessments

o        How can we Involve Students in the assessment process?

o        Can we implement Student-Creation of Rubrics and Guide Students in Assessing Their Own Work?

o        How can we Codify and Use Assessments For Learning to guide our instruction?

In everything the SOCIAL STUDIES group does:  UBD / Assessment

o        How do we make our circular maps (UBD) the central focus of all we do in the department?

o        How can the maps help us to Evaluate Our Assessments to ensure we are testing what we say we are?

o        How can formative assessment and grading practices help in keeping student and teacher Workloads at a manageable level?
