Global Studies

 Instructor: Todd Holmberg

COURSE CONTENT

Students of Global Studies II continue studying similar issues as Global Studies I.  We will examine the geographic, economic, political, social, and religious systems of the world. The goal of the class is to answer the question, How and why do humans create culture?” In this semester we will study the Eastern World.  The Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, China, Japan, and Southeast Asia are the regions that we will study.

MATERIALS

There are a few things that I would like you to bring on a daily basis.  Your text, Global Mosaics, is a great tool for you, so please bring it.  Please bring a notebook and a folder as well because I will give some notes and a whole lot of handouts.  You won’t need your atlas daily, but sometimes I might ask you to.

EVALUATION

You will be graded on everything you do.  I always expect you to strive to do your best in and out of the classroom.  Your grade will be determined by a cumulative amount of points in the following categories:

CLASS PARTICIPATION

I expect ALL students to be ACTIVE learners in our classroom.  It is up to you to make a positive mark on your teacher and your classmates.  Come to class with a positive attitude, ready to learn.  All put-downs, disruptive behavior, and negatives in general are not welcome in our classroom.

HOMEWORK

Homework will be given frequently throughout the semester.  It is not designed as torture, but as a way for us to get information before class starts.  It will allow us to do more fun stuff than just lecture.  Students are required to complete their assignments on time.  Late assignments will receive 50% of the original value.  It is the student’s responsibility to approach the teacher when he or she is absent to see what is missed and to turn in assignments.

TESTS AND QUIZZES

We will have a major exam for each region that we study. The tests will be announced and you will know about them at least a week in advance. We will also have quizzes within each unit.  These quizzes may be announced or unannounced.  Students have two days to make up any quiz or test or it will be recorded as a zero. This includes your first day back.  Make ups will be done outside of class time Cheating of any kind will result in a zero for that quiz or test.

STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY

Your job as a member of my class is to attend class and be an open-minded learner.  Attending class is essential to your success in Global Studies. Your energies will be spent becoming more aware and educated about the world in which you live.

TEACHER’S RESPONSIBILITY
