Independent SAT Vocabulary Reading Book
Targets:
- As you read a selected book, to identify
passages that include vocabulary in which you are not familiar, writing
down the contextual definition. (at least 15-five
from the first third of the book, five from the second third of the book,
and five from the final third of the book.
- To identify passages that show the dominant trait of the protagonist. (at least 6-two from the first third of the book, two
from the 2nd third of the book and two from the final 3rd
of the book.
- To identify passages that show the main conflict or problem in the book. (at least 3—one from the first third of the book, one
from the 2nd third of the book, and one from the final 3rd
of the book.
Grade: 120 points: 5 points for each item above.
ENTIRE PROJECT DUE: MONDAY, JULY 7TH
Criteria:
- Must be handwritten in blue or black
ink on non-spiral notebook paper.
- Devote three sheets of notebook paper
for the passages for vocabulary: one for each section of the book.
Example: Vocabulary:
A Separate Peace by John
Knowles
- Passages must be cited correctly. Ie: “Finny was always trying to inveigle others
into doing what he wanted” (6).
Inveigle means to force
or to coerce into doing something.
- Devote one sheet of notebook paper for
passages that deal with the protagonist’s dominant trait.
Example: Dominant Trait of Protagonist: A
Separate Peace by John Knowles
- Passages must be cited correctly. Ie: “There was no god in Finny’s
universe” (28).
Finny is showing that he is self-centered, that he is the most important
person in the
World.
Example: Conflict
or problem in A Separate Peace by
John Knowles---war.
6. Devote one sheet of notebook paper to
passages that show the conflict or problem in the novel.

Passages must be cited correctly. Ie: “What was he(Finny)
trying to do? Get some kind of hold over
me?” (7).
Shows the war within Gene and his feelings of
resentment towards Gene.
