Course Goal

The course goal for Traditional Grammar is for the student to develop a command of grammar and to recognize strong and weak sentences in writing.  Emphasis on reading comprehension and fluency will be stressed as well.

 

Course Texts:  Three programmed learning texts which include unit quizzes and  major tests.  In addition, students will be given informal journal writing assignments and models of strong sentences.  We will also do timed readings to increase reading comprehension and fluency.  There is a final exam that covers the grammar and punctuation that covers all three programmed learning texts.

Grading:  90-100=A

                80-89=B

                70-79=C

                60-69=D

                     59 and below=F

  The final exam is worth 20% of the course grade.

 

 

Expectations

  • You will need a spiral notebook for assignments.  A two subject notebook will work best:  one subject for the grammar exercises and one for the writing
  • Quality of Work: 
  1. label exercise and date
  2. write in either blue or black ink or pencil
  3. do not tear exercises from your spiral
  4. all exercises for a unit must be satisfactorily completed before a unit quiz is issued.
  • Be on time for class.  You are allowed only two (2) absences for summer school.
  • Tardies to class and tardies from break, will result in detentions at 6:30 a.m.
  • Break is from 11:00- 11:10 a.m..

Monday: course information ,diagnostic test, Unit I- 2200,

Impromptu journal, basic sentence styling,

Tuesday:  continue with programmed learning books

Basic sentence styling and diagramming

Wednesday:   continue with programmed learning books

Basic sentence variations

Thursday:  continue with programmed learning books

Basic sentence variations and models

Friday:  continue with programmed learning books

Models of good sentence styling to communicate a message.  ACT practice test- mechanics and grammar usage

By Friday, June 6, bring independent reading book choice to class. 

 

 

Week II:  June 9-13

Monday:  programmed learning Book 2200 through Unit 9 by end of week.

Sentence combining and vocabulary study.  Homework:  vocabulary sentence combining of core sentences due Tuesday.

Tuesday:  programmed learning continued. Vocabulary/sentence combining.  Using sentence structure to vary our writing.

Wednesday:   programmed learning.  Sentence combining

Thursday:    programmed learning.  Sentence combining

Friday:   programmed learning.  Test over vocabulary/sentence combining, using sentence completion type test and recognizing sentence structures.

Week III:  June 16 –June 20

Monday:  programmed learning.  Finish Book 2200 and through Unit 4 of Book 2600. Identifying editing errors in texts.

Tuesday:  programmed learning.  Identifying strong paragraph structure and identifying editing errors.

Wednesday:  programmed learning.  Identifying editing errors in drafts of writing.

Thursday:  programmed learning texts.  Identifying editing errors.

Friday:  programmed learning texts.  Practice test for revised SAT for recognizing editing errors.  Midterm  Grade will consist of Units 1-11 and Final over text 2200 and Units 1-4 tests of Book 2600.

 

Week IV:  June 23-27

Monday:  programmed learning texts through Book 2600, Unit 8 and timed reading from Timed Readings, 3rd Edition by Jamestown Publishers to increase reading fluency and comprehension.

Tuesday:  programmed learning and timed readings from Timed Readings, 3rd Edition text.

Wednesday:  programmed learning and timed readings for reading comprehension and fluency.

Thursday:  programmed learning and timed readings

Friday:  programmed learning and timed readings.  Charting progress.  Journal submission of progress, written carefully.

Week V:  June 30-July 4

No School on Friday, July 4

Monday:  programmed learning through Unit 12 of Book 2600 and first 3 units of Book 3200  Vocabulary study and sentence combining.  Sentence combining homework for Tuesday.

Tuesday:  programmed learning and  Review as a class grammar/punctuation exercises.

Wednesday:   programmed learning and review as a class grammar/punctuation exercises.

Thursday:  programmed learning and vocabulary study in text.  Discovering the meaning of a word contextually.

Friday:  programmed learning and vocabulary test by recognizing the correct usage of the meaning of a word in a text.
