Course Objectives:

bullet Students will make all required deadlines.
bullet Students will learn the basics of yearbook layout, design, copy writing, photography and Adobe InDesign.
bullet Students will conduct interviews as needed for their pages and have interviewees sign off on their quotes.
bullet Students will take pictures or be responsible for securing a photographer for their pages.
bullet Students will attend events as needed to learn about their assigned spread assignments.

 Grading:
I calculate grades for each deadline.  Everyone begins his/her spread with an “A.”  However, your grade will be lowered if:

bullet

you have misspelled names (ONE misspelled name will drop your grade to a B)

bullet

you have not followed the guidelines for font, font sizes, caption sizes, etc.

bullet

you have missing links

bullet

you do not have your quote cards signed off by the people who are quoted in your page

bullet

you have rushed through your page and it is not a quality job

bullet

you do not make final deadline and you have not filled out a deadline difficulty sheet (deadline difficulty sheets must be completed and signed by the staff member, editor and chief and adviser at least 24 hours before final deadline)

 Plagiarism

According to the NCHS Redbook, “Plagiarism is cheating.  It is the act of using another person’s ideas or expressions in your work without acknowledging the source.  In other words, to plagiarize is to give the impression that you have written or thought something that you have in fact borrowed from someone else.  Plagiarism is essentially theft—the stealing of someone else’s intellectual property” (5).

Cheating or plagiarizing at any level, at any time, will not be tolerated.  Consequently, when evidence of cheating or plagiarism exists, the assignment will receive no credit, the student has no opportunity to make up that work, and the deans will be notified.

In addition, any student who chooses to share his or her work with another will also lose credit.  That credit will be lost even if the student claims to have no knowledge of the other person’s using the original paper.

Do all of your own work; do not give your work to other people, and you will not have a problem!

Tardiness and Truancy

Class begins when the bell rings.  I expect you to be in your seat and ready to begin class (materials out, etc.).  By being tardy you are missing out on valuable instruction time.  Chronic Tardiness (3 or more) will result in dean referrals.

Because of the general nature of this class, you will receive a hall pass that allows you to be in other parts of the building other than room 312 or 316.  Please use this pass when needed; I will take it away if you are abusing the privilege.

 Classroom Policies

bullet

All rules outlined in the Naperville Central Red Book will be followed in my class.  This includes the dress code and cell phone policies.

bullet

I assume that as upperclassmen you understand what appropriate classroom behavior looks like.  Respect yourself, others, and me, and there will be no problems.
