Speech Communication

Who should take this course?             Sophomores

Course focus/umbrella questions:       What is my role in a variety of communities?

Non-negotiable assignments required of all students who take this course:

  • Elements of communication and the communication process
  • Perception and its effects on communication
  • Verbal communication
  • Non-verbal communication
  • Listening
  • Self-concept
  • Self-disclosure
  • Group communication
  • Problem-solving
  • Public speaking

Required reading:       Person to Person: An Introduction to Speech Communication

Course-specific policies

  • Students must perform on the day they are assigned.  Students who do not go on their due date will receive a zero.

Student expectations 

  • Students are expected to record daily targets in their notebooks.

What makes this course different from other companion courses?  There is no companion course to Speech Communication.  All students, regardless of ability or interest, are required to take this course.

Any other relevant and important course related information:           Self-reflection is critical for student understanding of the essential understandings of this course.  Students are required to provide the necessary media materials to keep a video portfolio of their performances.
