Foundation of the Business World
This is the basic's of business.  Students learn about wants and needs and supply and demand and how all of them directly effect the way our ecomomy works.  Students also study about the Federal Reserve and visit the Chicago Branch when going to Chicago's Financial District.

Students are also encouraged to read the newspaper and find articles about items that have been covered in class.  Students then write a summary on the article and present it to the class.  This allows students the opportunity engage in discussions on current topics that affect the nations ecomomy or that hit hard right here at home.

Banking Simulation

In the banking simulation students learn about banks and opening checking and savings accounts and different services that are offered.  Students are required to maintain a checking account during this unit.  This requires students to write checks, make deposits, use an ATM (Debt card), record bank fees, keep an account register up-to-date, and reconcile their checkbook when their bank statement arrives.

Saving and Investing

What is the difference between saving and investing?  This is always one of the first questions that I ask my Intro students.  Some think it is the same and others think it is different.  During this unit students learn how if they begin to invest wisely now  for the long run, instead of a get rich quick they will be much better off when they get to that ripe old age of retirement.  When working is for the young folks.  Students use the Chicago Tribune on a daily basis and learn to read the stock pages.  Do you know what SALES in 000's means?  If not, ask your child, they will be able to give you the answer.  It seems like this is where students develop a lot of rapport with each other and learn the value of working as a team to achieve a goal.  Students work together  in small groups and in pairs to brainstorm, and work on coming to a concensus.  It is hard enough trying to get four or five adults to agree, try teenagers!:)

Stock Market Game

THE BEAR

VS

THE BULL
$100,000 dollars!  Wow!  What are you going to do with all that money?  Students from the Intro to Business class have wonderful ideas!!  Working in conjuction with the Chicago Tribune students pay the Stock Market Game for 10 weeks.  Students are broken up into groups of four to five members.  Each group member has a role that has to be taken on. (President, Treasurer, Secertary, Researcher, Stock Tracker) Within each group students must engage in researching companies they feel they would like to invest in.  Students then MUST come to a consensus about the investment.  When the consesus is reached, students must investigate which exchange American, NASDAQ, or NYSE the common stock is held on.  Students then make their trade and hope their investment pays off.

Students learn the basics of investing and with the help of Partnerhips with Rob Siracusano and others who have volunteered their time.  Students have the opportunity to ask perfessional in the business what they think about their choices.
