PHILOSOPHY: District 203 Music Curriculum

Because music is a basic expression of human culture, every student should have access to a balanced, comprehensive, and sequential program of study in music. A broad experience with a variety of music through creating, performing, and responding is necessary to enable students to make informed musical judgments and understand connections and relationships between music and other disciplines. Further, to participate fully in a diverse global society, students must understand their own cultural heritage and those of others within their communities and beyond.

National Standards for Arts Education:

Students should be able to communicate at a basic level in the four arts disciplines: dance, music, theater, and the visual arts.

Students should be able to communicate proficiently in at least one art form.

Students should be able to develop and present basic analyses of works of arts.

Students should have an informed acquaintance with exemplary works of art from a variety of cultures and historical periods.

Students should be able to relate various types of arts, knowledge, and skills within and across the arts disciplines.

At Beebe your student’s education will meet all of the National Standards with exceeding expectations. As a team, Mary Parks, Laura Warren, Brianne Smith and Caryn Borgetti work to build curricular connections in P.E., Art, and Music.

Music Content Standards:

Students should know and be able to do these things in music:

Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music
Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music
Composing and arranging music within specific guidelines
Reading and notating music
Listening to, analyzing, and describing music
Evaluating music and music performances
Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts

Each day in music class more than one of these standards is being met.
