The following are course selections that will be available during the 2002 school year to District 203 staff members. The opportunities are open to all certified staff members as well as assistants that work with special needs students. Please send in the attached registration sheets to Teri at the administration center, Special Education Department, PSAC. If you have any questions regarding these classes, please call Teri at 420-6564.

CPI Training (Refresher)
“Non-Violent Crisis Intervention”
This course will review the verbal intervention and
physical intervention techniques learned in the two-day course. A short video and workbook will be completed
focusing on interventions in the school settings. You must have completed
the two-day training to take this refresher.

Crisis Intervention is a two-day course that teaches de-escalation
techniques. Day one focuses on verbal
intervention techniques and day two on physical intervention techniques. Participants

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY
Co:Writer/Write-Outloud
This inservice will provide hands on training with Co:writer, a word prediction program and
Write-Outloud, a talking word processor.
Both pieces of software are helpful for special needs students with
writing difficulties.

Using and Customizing Discover:Switch Basics to
Intermediate on Macintosh and Windows
The Discover:Switch, by Don Johnston, Inc., allows single
switch access to software programs and scanning arrays. Learn what the Discover:Switch does, how it
works, and how to make it work for you.
Experience with Macintosh or Windows computers is desired.

Infinitec West Technology EXPO
This user-friendly, technology exhibition showcases a wide
variety of technologies that can assist individuals with or without
disabilities in school and everyday life.
Participants will be able to examine and explore devices at their own
pace. The open, interactive format of
each station gives participants an opportunity to compare and contrast devises
and talk with consultants.

First Tech Touch
This user friendly program offers participants an
opportunity to explore a variety of educational software programs and assistive
devices such as switches, joysticks, touch screens and adaptive keyboards. Participants will also explore ways of
incorporating play into a computer activity.
In essence, First Tech Touch provides parents and therapist with an
alternative vehicle for stimulating play and learning.

Get SETT for Success with Assistive Technology
Joy Zabala, will provide a brief refresher on the SETT
model. Then school based teams will
work together to problem-solve student case studies utilizing the “SETT” model. Teams are invited to bring cases to share
and receive feedback from Joy and other participants. In addition, feedback on creating efficient procedures, forms and
strategies to inclement SETT model will be shared. Resources will be provided to the participants.

Joy will provide an overview of the school’s legal
responsibilities to provide assistive tech.
She will outline her school team based assistive tech assessment model,
SETT. This team based problem-solving

of making decisions about tech supports.

IntelliPics Studio is a multimedia authoring program for
teachers and students. With IntelliPics
Studio you can paint, draw, import digital pictures, create animations, play
videos and play and record sounds.
Teachers can add quizzes to increase the interactive features of this
program. It is universally accessible
for all learners. This course explores
the software and takes participants through tutorials addressing new features.

Support: Hands-on Problem Solving Early Childhood – 12th Grade
