Detailed Description of Science Camps

All Camps are for One Week (Monday through Friday).  Each date listed is the start of a new week with the activities repeated.   All camps are taught by certified teachers.

A.   "Your World and Welcome To It"    Girls finishing 4th or 5th grades
One of the original camp curriculums developed for girls only, this experience provides young girls with a variety of "hands-on", problem-solving, experiments to stimulate and foster an interest in science.  Activities are created from all areas of science... earth, physical, biological, chemical, and astronomical.  The focus of the activities is to take the students through the scientific method and develop an analytical process for solving problems. The experiments are new every year so that girls can return after their 4th grade and 5th grade years.

B.    "Mars Mission I"    Boys/Girls finishing 3rd, 4th or 5th Grades

The purpose of the "Mars" camps was to promote an understanding of  the relationship between math, science and technology... math being the language of science and a tool of technology and technology being the application of math and science concepts and principles.  This camp centers on a theme of a journey to the planet Mars and the initial arrival on the planet with the creation of a biosphere.  Other activities include the construction, testing, and launching of rockets, creation of an international space station model, research of the planet Mars, egg-stranaut drop designing a re-entry vehicle, and the creation of Martian rovers.

C.   "Mars Mission II"   Boys/Girls finishing 3rd, 4th or 5th Grades

The Mars experience and goals continues with the Mars Mission II, a "hands-on" series of experiments and activities that range from rocket launching to space station design.  This camp explores several scientific concepts that focus on space travel and adaptation to the Mars environment.  Mars II's activities include rocket launching using different rockets from the Mars I camp.  Some computer simulations and research are part of this exciting camp experience.

D.    "Mars Mission III"  Boys/Girls finishing 3rd, 4th or 5th Grades
This third Mars experiences continues the goals and theme of the previous Mars adventures.  Although students may take the Mars courses in any order and even in one summer, they were designed to allow students to come back to science camp for three consecutive years, experiencing different activities with each camp.  This camp includes rocket launching, robotics, lego construction, computer simulations, and robotics.  The camp activities are tied together with the theme of a return trip to Mars followed by colonization and exploration of the planet.

E.      "Mars Mission Advanced"    Boys/Girls finishing 6th and 7th Grades

This camp involves advanced topics, experiments, and simulations for the older students.  Rocketry, robotics, lasers, and other activities have been created to challenge the junior high mind.  The content is more advanced but continues the "hands-on" theme of a trip to Mars and engages students in higher level thinking and problem-solving experiences.

F.      "Science Olympiad"    Boys/Girls finishing 5th, 6th and 7th Grades

This camp involves advanced topics, experiments, and simulations for the older students.  These are activities that lead up to the Science Olympiad program at the Junior High level.

G.      "Exploring the Earth...Ecology and Technology"  Boys/Girls finishing 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th grades

This camp's theme keeps the students on Planet Earth with an abundance of activities and experiments from the earth, physical, biological, and chemical sciences.  Students explore the Earth's environment, with an emphasis on weather, pollution, the study of water quality, and man's impact on the environment.  A special emphasis is placed on what archaeologists do with activities allowing students to simulate an archaeological dig.  Included in the week is a day trip to the Field Museum of Natural History where students are guided through the dinosaur exhibit as well as the special "Underground Exhibit."

H.        "On the Frontiers of Science:  Experiments that Ooze, Bubble, Drip or Bounce"  Boys/Girls finishing Gr.2

Created for the younger scientist, this camp offers the student completing 2nd grade with a potpourri of experiences with science concepts and principles from all disciplines: biology, chemistry, physics, and astronomy.  These numerous activities move the students through experiences quickly yet focus on their ability to observe, predict, infer, analyze, and summarize what they have experienced while having fun with science.  This camp will keep students experimenting all summer!

I.        "Challenges for Future Scientists"  For Boys/Girls completing 1st Grade

Created for some of our youngest Science Camp participants, this camp's purpose is to instill in young minds the fun of learning science concepts through exploration and discovery.  All activities are structured so that students "discover" the elements, properties, or phenomena by interacting with simple materials.  Magnetism, electricity, chemistry, physics, simple rocketry (bottle rockets), ecology and biology are some of the topics and areas of study.

J. "Exploring My World!" For Boys/Girls finishing Kindergarten Half-day Only.

This is the first year for this camp and resulted from an overwhelming number of parents interested in a science camp for students completing kindergarten. These half-day sessions will allow these young scientists to explore all areas of science while refining their skills of observation, reasoning, and problem-solving. These "hands-on" activities will certainly motivate your young child to explore science concepts.
