Naper Settlement's unique school programs give your students a lesson
in Northern Illinois heritage they can't get out of any textbook, because
here in our village, history lessons come alive -- with sights and sounds
at every turn recreating the 19th century. A stroll through our 13
acres of park-like grounds takes you from 1831 -- the time of our area's
earliest settlers -- to 1900 and the opulence of the Victorian era. Costumed
villagers welcome you into historic homes, working businesses, a fort,
a schoolhouse and chapel; and the Martin Mitchell House, the grand Victorian
home original to our site, listed on the National Register of Historic
Places.
Time Travel Trip (All grades)
Step back in time as you explore our village. This self-guided tour
allows you to follow the development of a typical northern Illinois town
as it grows from a frontier outpost to a thriving agricultural and industrial
center. Your trip will include demonstrations of 19th-century trades and
crafts such as printing, blacksmithing, spinning, weaving, quilting, rug-making,
or basketweaving. Offered April through October, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. $4
per student. $6 per additional adult. Recommended touring time is 3 to
3 1/2 hours, plus time for lunch. Capacity: 300 students per day.
Christmas Celebration (All grades)
Stroll our village in all its holiday splendor to discover how holiday
celebrations changed from the pioneer period with its meager decorations
and gifts to the grand display of the Victorian era. A select group of
buildings with interpreters in period clothing will be open; 9:30 - 11:30
a.m. or 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. December 5-8, and 12-15, 2000 only; $4 per student.
$6 per additional adult. Capacity: 180 students each session.
Illinois Ho! (Kindergarten through 2nd Grade)
Students experience pioneer life with hands-on activities, learn the
varied patterns of a quilt, listen to story-telling and visit a real log
house in this 1 1/2 hour program. Offered in January, February and early
March; $4.50 per student (min. 20 / max. 60) $4.50 per additional adult.
The Underground Railroad in Northern Illinois (7th
& 8th Grades)
Students take on the role of 1856 scholars while19th-century townspeople
challenge them to deal with important issues of the day. This 2-hour program
is an ideal supplement to classroom studies of the Civil War period and
Black History Month activities. Offered January, February and early March;
9:00 - 11:00 a.m. or 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. $6.50 per student (min. 40 / max.
60) $6.50 per additional adult.
School for Tools (3rd through 5th Grades)
Students are invited to acquire hands-on experience with 19th-century
tools in this lively 90-minute workshop. Through a variety of activities,
the students learn what it took to saw wood, print a newspaper, put out
a fire, or shape metal in the days of their great-great-great grandparents.
Offered in January, February and early March; $5.50 per student (min. 30
/ max. 60) $5.50 per additional adult. Larger group reservations available;

Living History (4th grade; limited to Naperville schools)
Hands-on work and play in our pioneer and Victorian homes bring the
1800s to life in this two hour program. 1999 Recipient of the Illinois
State Historical Society's Excellence in Achievement Award. Offered November.
$6.50 per student.
19th Century School Days
Take our teacher certification workshop, then conduct this program
yourself in our 19th century Copenhagen Schoolhouse. Lead a one to two
hour class complete with slates and McGuffey Readers. Offered January,
February and early March; $2 per student for currently certified teachers.
Teachers must be recertified every two years. (Certification workshop will
be held Thursday, November 16, 2000 from 3:30-5:00 -- see details listed
below.) Capacity: 30 students.
Teacher Tools Bring the Settlement to Your Classroom.
Three Naperville Women
Award-winning volunteer Peg Yonker is the author and main presenter
of a fun and educational first-person look at three women from Naperville's
history: a Pottawatomi woman; Almeda Naper, wife of Naperville's founder;
and Hannah Ditzler, a Naperville teacher. The half-hour presentation can
be adjusted to any age level. $200.00.
History-in-a-Box "19th-Century Child's World" or "Gearing
Up for Industrialization"
Help your students connect with the past right in your own classroom.
Our school loan kits provide you artifacts and authentic reproductions
of everyday objects used in the 1800s plus suggestions for their incorporation
into social studies, science and language arts lessons. Kits are adaptable
for K-8 curriculum.. $20.00 (Naperville schools); $30.00 (others) per two-week
loan period.
Victorian Diaries
An interactive kit allows you and your students to visit the late 1800s
in a rural Illinois town through the diaries of 10-year-old twins Alex
and Emily Morrison. Students learn Victorian manners and customs while
recreating a typical parlor party and school day. Through paper crafts
and indoor and outdoor games, students acquire an appreciation for life
in the 19th century. In tandem with the school loan kit, you may arrange
for Alex and Emily's aunt or uncle (one of our museum educators) to visit
your classroom during your loan period, to lead your class in a Victorian
game. $25 (Naperville schools); $35.00 (others) per two-week loan period.

Teacher Workshops 19th-Century School Days

This workshop provides you with necessary information to assume the
role of a rural school teacher at Naper Settlement. Take activities from
the past back to your classroom, then return to our village with your students
to lead a one to two-hour 19th Century School Days class -- complete with
slates and McGuffey's readers -- in our one-room Copenhagen Schoolhouse.
$55.00 per teacher for certification (entitles your class - maximum 30
students - to one session from January through the first two weeks of March
in the year 2001). Certification is mandatory to reserve the schoolhouse
for "19th Century School Days" program, and is required for any teacher
certified in 1998 or earlier; recertification is required every two years.
Naper Settlement Museum Store
The Naper Settlement Museum Store provides a variety of excellent and
unusual educational supplies such as books, posters, maps, postcards, toys,
and souvenirs. Student shopping will be available at the end of all programs
and can be arranged when making reservations. Or, fax your order directly
to the store and materials will be waiting upon your group's arrival. The
Museum Store is open during regular Settlement hours: 10:00-4:00 Tuesday-Saturday;
1:00-4:00 Sunday, April-October. Additional hours can be arranged for winter
programs; call the store at (630) 420-6016 for assistance.

Your group must have a confirmed reservation to visit Naper Settlement.
Call well in advance, as some programs fill up quickly. Before calling,
have the following information ready: number of students; number of adults
(we require one adult chaperone for every 16-18 students); the date you'd
like to visit, plus alternate dates.
Handicap Accessibility: While Naper Settlement is in compliance with
the Americans with Disabilities Act, many of our historic buildings have
limited accessibility. If your group has special needs, please notify us
at time of booking so that we can plan accordingly for your visit.
