American Legion

PURPOSE:  The primary purpose of the American Legion is to help disabled veterans, children, and youth through education.

GENERAL PUBLIC:  The American Legion has planned and operated Memorial Day parades in Naperville since 1921 and have been joined by the Judd Kendal Post VFW which was formed in Naperville in 1944. All school bands are part of the parade. Prior to the end of WW II, school children carried flowers to decorate the graves of deceased soldiers - about 71 graves. Today, time does not permit visiting each veteran's grave.

HIGH SCHOOLS:  The Post sends one boy to Boy's State and one girl to Girl's State from each high school in the Naperville area. Selection for this award is made through the high school counselors.  The Post sponsors an oratorical contest each year, but does not have a student participate each year.

JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS:  The Legion presents the American Legion Award Medal to a student selected at each junior high school based on courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship, and service.  The Legion also provides speakers at the Jefferson Jr. High School WW II program and other junior highs when requested.

ALL SCHOOLS:  Members raise the American Flag at all schools in the district one day before Veteran's Day. Each school sets up its own program. The Veteran's Day ceremony is held at Veteran's Park on November 11 at 11:00 am, which is open to the public.
